Project Based Learning in the Classroom-
Philosophy on PBL and Classroom environment-
On my journey through PBL and through our campuses initiative and scope to transform learning through the PBL lens my journey started three years ago.
In my classroom I wanted to create a place where students were engaged and were looking to discover and manipulate the concepts that we teach in history.
I wanted my students to take an active role in my classroom and create more of a student centered classroom where students took risks and were able to dive into history and discover and experiment with the depth of our curriculum.
What does PBL look like in my classroom?
I use PBL to create a higher perfoming classroom that challenges my students and involves them in the learning. Inquiry based experience
PBL's that I have in my classroom
Clash of Countries - Exploration PBL - Emphasis on discovery and exploration
Reconstruction PBL - Emphasis on how are we empowered to reunite the South with the North - creating a federal governments plan
Entry Documents- Engaging students in the beginning process and "hooking students into the beginning stages of the process"

Entry Documents can be videos, letters that introduce your students to the project. This is just suppose to be a mere taste of what to look forward to in your project.
-Trying to emphasize discovery and looking for a deeper meaning and building on engagement

Knows and Need to Knows
Students are involved in the process and after students have seen the entry document this step now empowers students to get involved in the process and figure out what is important within the scope that they have just involved in
What do we know about Colonization?
Who led the age of Exploration?
What are rivalries? Why were they important?
Are we taking on roles of explorers?
Financing ?
Students then build off of eachothers questions and Final Product Questions/ Content Questions.
Workshops and Final Products
I have several ways that I do workshops. Students make these suggestions after re-evaluating the KWL chart and begin working. I embed workshops on important concepts and then hold these minilessons via edmodo or in class.
Front loaded videos, structured and unstructured
I have flip-videos that are embeded before the start of the PBL.
Prezi
Interactive Timelines that have embeded videos, mini-lessons or cloze notes
Ticki-Toki , Timetoast
Creation of Websites - Weebly, Wix, Googlesites
Rubrics - With Rubrics I like to give my students choices on their final products.
Generally during a PBL I will hand out rubrics two to three days into a project.
Within a PBL I like to make sure I have given them time to inquire/discover and research possibilities. I even have had some suggest ideas for final products.
